Paladin® Soil Fumigant

Paladin® is a novel, pre-plant soil fumigant for the treatment of weeds, soil-borne plant pathogens and nematodes in soils to be planted with vegetable and fruit crops where plastic-culture is used for fumigation. The new fumigant is now registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a restricted use pesticide to be used only by Certified Applicators. Click here for news release.

Paladin® soil fumigant formulations are available for both shank (Paladin®) and drip (Paladin® EC) applications. Arkema believes that Paladin® alone, or in combination with Chloropicrin will become an attractive substitute for methyl bromide in appropriate applications.

Arkema is the world’s largest manufacturer of DMDS, the active ingredient of Paladin®. DMDS is used today in a wide range of industrial applications, such as a sulfiding agent in petroleum refineries to make low-sulfur fuels and as part of the feed for steam crackers to help suppress the formation of coke and carbon monoxide, thus keeping the crackers in operation longer between shutdowns. In addition, DMDS is permitted for use as a food additive in the US and in Europe.

DMDS is produced biogenically in wetlands and oceans, and plays a role in the global sulfur cycle. It is also produced by certain plants, including members of the Allium and Brassica families, where it has been postulated to play a natural defensive role in response to damage. Measurable levels of biogenic DMDS are found in a variety of crops and foods.

Paladin® soil fumigant is a restricted use pesticide and is only available for sale and use by Certified Applicators.
